Holiday House Tour in Historic Milton

Sponsored by the Milton Century Club

      on December 13, 2014

Boughs, holly, and warm hospitality await you on Saturday, December 13, 2014 when the homes and halls of Milton will be decked out for the Milton Holiday House Tour.    You’ll enjoy the spirit of the holidays in this charming town that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The tour begins at 2:30 rain or shine and ends in the glow of sparkling lights at 7:00 pm.

Eight beautifully decorated private homes and three historic buildings are featured on the tour.  New this year!  The first 100 visitors to purchase tickets for $20 prior to December 13 will start off their tour with a special holiday reception beginning at 1:30 pm.   These guests will enjoy refreshments and tales of Milton’s past at the circa 1769 Prettyman House decorated with period antiques throughout.

Additional bedecked homes on the tour include one of the oldest residences in Milton – an original brick and noggin home with primitive furnishings built in 1750; a Victorian Cottage from 1810 with a recently renovated interior with an open floor plan and chef’s kitchen; and an 1875 Pharmacy with original cabinetry and its attached home furnished almost entirely with antique furniture dated from 1860 to1900.   Visitors will also experience a restored 1866 Colonial Cottage that was once a ship carpenter’s shop and also a button-making shop, a circa 1830 Farmhouse decorated in Victorian Cottage style, a Ranch style home with an extensive collection of Santas and Russian stacking dolls, a Contemporary Craftsman style home featuring a collection of WWII military memorabilia, and a Colonial style home showcasing a unique nautical theme. Decorated public buildings on display include St. John The Baptist Episcopal Church, Milton’s Town Hall, and the Milton Historical Society and Museum.  The museum is housed in a former church built in 1857 with exceptional stained glass windows and stamped tin ceiling.

Be tempted by the homemade treats and beverages offered at several of the locations.  Our homeowners and hosts will be delighted to share information about the homes and cherished decorations.  Most of the locations are within walking distance of downtown Milton and the others are just a short drive away.

The Premiere Centre for the Arts at the Milton Theatre is also participating in the tour by offering a chance to come in from the cold and enjoy featured performers and a community sing-a-long from 4:30 – 5:30.  This musical interlude is free and open to the public.

Tickets purchased in advance are $20 for the house tour and the pre-tour reception or $15 for the tour only.  Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Milton Historical Society and Museum, 210 Union St.; Salon Milton, 517 Chestnut St.; Hillside Florist, 105 Lavinia St.; Lavender Fields Farm, 18864 Cool Spring Rd. (weekends only); Mercantile at Milton, 109 Union St., Milton, DE; or Lewes Printing, 33506 Crossing Ave., in Lewes.   For further information, call 302-682-4811.

Holiday House Tour tickets may also be purchased on December 13th at the Milton Historical Society, 210 Union St. and at the annual Holly Festival in the Fire Hall on Front St.  The Holly Festival is held from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm in the Fire Hall and throughout town.

The Holiday House Tour is sponsored by the Milton Century Club, a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.  The GFWC is one of the world’s oldest and largest women’s service organizations dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service.  GFWC members work locally to create global change by supporting the arts, preserving natural resources, advancing education, promoting healthy lifestyles, encouraging civic involvement, and working toward world peace and understanding.    Each club sets its agenda and works on projects and programs that address the specific needs of their communities.
