“Milton Collects” Silhouettes
The Milton Historical Society’s Speakers Series, “Milton Collects,”
presents Jessica Clark on Wednesday, May 27 featuring her collection of silhouettes. A silhouette is the image of a person, animal, object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single color, usually black, on a light background. Before the advent of photography in the mid-1800’s, portrait miniatures and silhouettes were a popular way to save the likeness of a loved one or a favorite pet or view. . Silhouettes were
also referred to as “profiles” and “shades”. Silhouettes date back at
least 32,000 years as seen in cave paintings. They are also evident in Egyptian and ancient Greek artworks.
Jessica Clark of Georgetown, Delaware will share her knowledge of silhouettes and her collection. Find out how to differentiate portrait miniatures and silhouettes, why this art form became known as silhouettes, how they were created in the 18th century, painting versus cutting silhouettes, and who are some of the most famous men and women profilists admired by collectors.
This presentation takes place at the MHS Museum, 210 Union St. in Milton
from 7:00 – 8:00 pm. “Milton Collects” Speakers Series is free and open
to the public. For further information, contact the Milton Historical Society at www.historicmilton.org or call 302-684-1010.
