Milton Architectural Walking Tours
The Milton Historical Society has scheduled walking tours for 2016 to begin in May and to continue during the summer months, and ending on October 1. Milton was originally known as the Head of the Broadkill River and the town enjoys a rich heritage with 198 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The walking tours review the town’s early history and include lively discussions of the ship captains and seafaring men who called Milton home. A broad range of architectural styles will be featured, and button sheds, barns and outbuildings will be discussed as the tours wind through side lanes and alleys.
The Boats, Buttons, Beans and Beer Walking Tours will take place on Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. on these dates: May 21, June 25, July 23, August 20, and October 1. Tourgoers will explore historic Milton and find out why boats, buttons, beans, and beer are so important to the town. The tour will also include a history of the King Cole Cannery, part of the site where Dogfish Head Brewery is now located. Participants should park in the Dogfish Head Brewery parking lot off Village Center Boulevard and meet near the Steampunk Treehouse by the brewery visitors’ entrance. For GPS purposes, use 511 Chestnut St., Milton DE 19968. Those who also plan to take a tour of the brewery should sign up in advance by contacting Dogfish Head for a brewery tour beginning after the Milton walking tour ends, around 11:00 a.m.
The Milton Architectural Walking Tours will be offered on Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. on May 14, June 18, July 16, August 13, and September 17. Participants in the architectural tours should meet at the Milton Historical Society at 210 Union St. in downtown Milton. There is parking behind the Museum.
Both walking tours cover a little over a mile each and last about an hour and a half. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes and hats are recommended. Bring and use plenty of sunblock and bottled water. The cost for each tour is $5 cash; MHS members are free. Reservations are required and tours are limited to 15 participants. Reserve a tour by calling 302-684-1010 or by emailing email@example.com.
After the walking tours, visitors are welcome to explore the Historical Society’s Museum which is open from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is free. For more information, contact the Museum at 302-684-1010, email firstname.lastname@example.org or go to www.historicmilton.org.
